How it works
From understanding progress to shaping what's next.
Arc XII brings the key parts of SEND practice together in one connected workflow — so that understanding where a pupil is working can directly inform what happens next in teaching.
The approach
Four connected parts. One coherent picture.
Arc XII is not a collection of separate SEND tools. The continuum, assessment, evidence and planning are designed to work together — each part informing the next.
Progress should lead somewhere. Arc XII is built so that it does.
The workflow
How Arc XII works in practice.
Each part of the platform connects to the next. Practitioners move from establishing a baseline, through assessment and evidence, to next objectives and planning — with a clear record at every stage.
Start with where the pupil is working.
Use the A1–A12 continuum to identify the range where a pupil is currently working. The continuum spans National Curriculum subject areas and Preparation for Adulthood, with small-step objectives that reflect the detail of SEND progression.
The baseline gives practitioners a shared starting point — one that is specific enough to be useful and flexible enough to reflect each pupil's profile.
Record progress with professional judgement.
Practitioners assess against continuum objectives using an Emerging, Developing, Secure model. Progress is recorded over time, giving a clear picture of movement within and across continuum levels.
The assessment model is designed to reflect how SEND progress actually happens — in small steps, over time, with professional judgement at the centre.
Connect evidence to the objectives it supports.
Evidence is linked directly to the objectives it relates to — not stored separately in a folder or portfolio. This keeps the picture coherent and makes it easier to see what supports each assessment judgement.
Evidence can include observations, work samples and practitioner notes — all connected to the continuum so the record stays meaningful.
Use what you know to shape what comes next.
Arc XII surfaces the next objectives in the continuum based on current assessment — giving practitioners a clear, evidence-informed starting point for planning teaching.
Next objectives are drawn directly from the continuum, so the connection between assessment and teaching is explicit and traceable.
Planning
From objectives to teaching.
The Arc XII Planning Library provides structured, curriculum-aligned planning resources that connect directly to continuum objectives. Practitioners can move from identified next steps to planned teaching without starting from scratch.
Planning resources are organised by subject area and continuum level — so the connection between assessment and teaching is clear and practical.
Who uses it
Built for the people who lead SEND provision.
Arc XII is designed to work at classroom, school and Trust level — giving each role the information they need in a form they can use.
SENCOs and inclusion practitioners
Use Arc XII to build and maintain a detailed, evidence-informed picture of each pupil's progression — and to connect that picture to teaching through next objectives and planning.
Directors of Inclusion and school leaders
Use Arc XII to understand progression across a provision, identify patterns and have informed conversations about SEND at school and Trust level.
Multi-Academy Trust leaders
Use Arc XII to establish a shared language for SEND progression across schools — supporting consistency, oversight and strategic planning at Trust level.
Professional judgement
The platform organises. The practitioner decides.
Arc XII is designed to support professional judgement, not replace it. The continuum, assessment model and planning resources give practitioners a structured framework — but the judgements remain theirs.
That is how it should be.
