Assessment

Build a meaningful picture of progress.

Arc XII Assessment gives practitioners a structured, evidence-informed way to recognise and record progress for pupils working across the SEND continuum — and to use that information to shape what comes next.

Conventional assessment wasn't designed for this.

Age-related assessment frameworks are built around expected attainment milestones. For pupils with SEND who are working significantly below those milestones, they often fail to capture the progress that is actually happening.

Arc XII Assessment is built around the Arc XII A1–A12 SEND continuum — so it starts where the pupil is, not where the curriculum expects them to be.

Small but significant steps of progress go unrecorded.

Assessment becomes a record of what a pupil cannot do, rather than what they can.

It becomes harder to demonstrate progress to parents, governors and inspectors.

Planning loses its connection to what the pupil has actually achieved.

Three judgement levels. One clear picture.

Arc XII uses a straightforward three-level judgement model that reflects how learning actually develops — without oversimplifying it.

Emerging

The pupil is beginning to show awareness or early engagement with an objective. Progress is present but not yet consistent.

Developing

The pupil is working towards the objective with increasing consistency. Skills and understanding are consolidating.

Secure

The pupil demonstrates the objective consistently and independently across a range of contexts.

Judgements are made by the practitioner. Arc XII provides the structure and the record — professional judgement stays where it belongs.

How assessment works in Arc XII.

A clear, practical workflow that fits into how practitioners already work.

1

Establish a baseline

Start by locating the pupil on the Arc XII continuum. This creates a clear, shared reference point for the whole team — and a meaningful starting point for measuring progress.

2

Record judgements against objectives

Work through relevant continuum objectives and record Emerging, Developing or Secure judgements. Each judgement reflects the practitioner's professional view of where the pupil is working.

3

Add supporting evidence

Attach evidence directly to individual objectives — observations, photographs, work samples or notes. Evidence stays connected to the judgement it supports, keeping the full picture visible.

4

Track progress over time

Arc XII shows how assessment develops across assessment points, so progress is visible as a journey rather than an isolated snapshot. Changes in judgements are tracked automatically.

5

Use assessment to shape planning

Assessment information feeds directly into Arc XII Planning. Identified objectives become the basis for personalised next steps — so what practitioners learn about a pupil leads somewhere.

Everything you need to assess with confidence.

Continuum-linked objectives

All assessment is anchored to the Arc XII A1–A12 continuum, giving every judgement a clear developmental context.

Evidence management

Upload and attach evidence directly to objectives. Keep observations, photographs and notes connected to the progress they support.

Progress tracking

See how judgements change across assessment points. Progress is visible over time, not just at a single moment.

Reporting tools

Generate clear progress reports for parents, governors and senior leaders — without spending hours compiling information manually.

Multi-user access

Teaching assistants, class teachers and SENCOs can all contribute to the same pupil record, keeping the whole team aligned.

Connected to planning

Assessment information flows directly into Arc XII Planning, so next steps are always grounded in what the pupil has actually achieved.
